Midweek Holidays to Be Observed on Fridays – Full Details of Proposed Changes

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has announced sweeping changes to Ghana’s public holiday schedule, including a proposal to shift all midweek holidays that fall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays to the nearest Friday.
The announcement was made on the floor of Parliament, following the formal presentation of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which has been laid before the House.
Among the key highlights of the proposed legislation is the reintroduction of July 1 as a public holiday, and the restoration of Founder’s Day to its original date—September 21—replacing the current Founders’ Day observed on August 4.
One of the most notable provisions, and one likely to be welcomed by workers and businesses alike, is the plan to shift midweek holidays to Fridays. According to the Interior Ministry, this measure aims to create long weekends, improve work-life balance, and potentially enhance national productivity.
However, the proposal has not been without controversy. The Minority in Parliament has raised strong objections to the Majority’s decision to fast-track the bill under a certificate of urgency. They argue that the procedure undermines parliamentary scrutiny and diverts attention from more critical national concerns.
Debate on the bill is expected to intensify in the coming days as both sides of the House weigh the implications of the proposed changes.
