What Have You Been Doing Till Now? – Miracles Aboagye Questions Gov’t on Renewed Galamsey Fight

An Aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Miracles Aboagye, has questioned government’s sincerity in announcing a renewed fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 16, he argued that after years in office, it was disingenuous for authorities to present a fresh commitment as though the problem had just been discovered.
“What have you been doing all this time if you’re now going to renew the galamsey fight?” he asked.
Mr Aboagye maintained that citizens expected decisive action from the outset, not recycled promises that cast doubt on government’s credibility.
“It is not enough to say you are renewing the fight. The people want to see results, not rhetoric,” he added.
He further accused the administration of lacking consistency in policy and political will, noting that measures introduced in the past had been abandoned without explanation.
According to him, such inconsistencies had emboldened illegal miners and weakened public confidence in the state’s resolve to protect the environment.
Mr Aboagye urged the government to adopt a more transparent and accountable approach, stressing that safeguarding the country’s water bodies and forests should be treated as a national priority.
“This is about the future of our children and the survival of our communities. We need leadership that will act firmly and consistently, not one that revisits the same promises every few years,” he emphasised.
