Changing Bawumia Will Set NPP and Ghana Back 16 Years – 15 Eastern Region MPs Declare Unflinching Support

Fifteen out of the 23 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region have openly declared their unalloyed support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
The MPs, at a press conference in Nkawkaw on Wednesday, warned that replacing the former Vice President as the NPP’s flagbearer in the upcoming January 2026 internal contest would amount to a costly political gamble that could set both the party and Ghana’s progress back by 16 years.
They argued that after years of political skepticism and propaganda, Ghanaians are now gradually embracing Dr Bawumia’s policy ideas, many of which they claimed had been vindicated in the aftermath of the 2024 elections.
“After all the propaganda hurled against the NPP in the 2024 elections, it is becoming clearer by the day that Bawumia was right in many of the things he proposed. Now is the time more Ghanaians are warming up to his ideas. Changing him at this crucial moment will be setting ourselves back by another 16 years,” the MPs declared.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, MP for Achiase, described Dr Bawumia as the NPP’s most marketable and experienced option going into 2028.
“Having been well marketed and having served as Ghana’s most impactful Vice President, he is the best option—politically and policy-wise—to win us the next election,” he stressed.
The lawmakers praised Dr Bawumia’s humility, inclusiveness, and effectiveness, which they said reflect the qualities of leadership Ghanaians desire.
“He is humble, effective, and embraces all persons. We need a leader who unites, not one who divides. That is why we, as MPs from this region, are committing ourselves fully to his cause,” they added.
The MPs further pledged to campaign vigorously across the Eastern Region and beyond to ensure Dr Bawumia secures the mandate of the NPP grassroots and eventually leads the party to retain power in 2028.
