A tragic accident at Assin Fosu in the Central Region has claimed the life of a 40-year-old mother of four, Gladys Mensah, after a learner driver lost control of a truck on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at about 11:00 a.m.
According to police sources, the suspect, 26-year-old Benjamin Kwarfo, was teaching his conductor, Eric Ackon, 34, how to drive a Hyundai truck with registration number GR 6146-12, when the vehicle veered off the road due to Ackon’s inexperience.
The truck knocked down Gladys Mensah, who was hawking second-hand clothes near the SDA School at Habitat, a suburb of Assin Fosu. Eyewitnesses say the vehicle dragged her for several meters before crashing into a nearby house, causing significant damage to the structure.
Witnesses described the scene as horrifying, noting that the victim sustained severe head injuries and lost a lot of blood. She was rushed to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital but was pronounced dead later in the day.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Wonder Lumor, the Central North Regional Commander of the MTTD, confirmed that both the learner driver and the supervising driver have been detained to assist with investigations. The truck has also been impounded.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital morgue.
Shocked residents expressed their grief and called on authorities to cordon off the partially collapsed building hit by the truck, warning that it now poses a danger to pedestrians.
