Parliamentary Disorder a Poor Reflection on Speaker – Senyo Hosi

Convener of the OneGhana Movement and Trustee of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has criticised Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin over what he describes as persistent disorder in Ghana’s legislature, saying it reflects weak leadership and a worrying culture of impunity.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, December 13, Senyo Hosi expressed concern about the recurring chaos in Parliament and the absence of accountability following such incidents.

He referenced the disturbances that occurred during the vetting of the Chief Justice, questioning what became of the committee that was set up to investigate the matter.

“Look at what happened during the vetting of the Chief Justice. Has there been accountability since then? Where is it?” he asked. “They set up a committee, and where did that end?”

“Because they know that we’ll talk about it one week, two weeks, and it’s dead. That is the kind of Parliament that we are nurturing,” he said.

He argued that the repeated scenes of disorder are a reflection of leadership failure at the highest level of Parliament, insisting that the Speaker bears responsibility for maintaining discipline and shaping parliamentary culture.

“Frankly, it is telling on the leadership that we are getting from Honourable Bagbin,” Hosi stated.

The OneGhana Movement convener further warned that Speaker Bagbin, who is serving what is widely considered to be his final term, risks ending his tenure on a negative note if decisive steps are not taken to restore order.

“He should bring proper order in a Parliament that has a lot of new people, to shape the culture for governance and for posterity’s sake. We are not getting that from him as Speaker,” he added.

Mr Hosi stressed that Parliament, as a key democratic institution, must set standards for governance and accountability, warning that continued disorder undermines public confidence and Ghana’s democratic image.
