Former Assin Central Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has expressed confidence that the party’s ongoing presidential primaries will be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
Speaking to journalists at a polling centre in Assin Central in the Central Region on voting day, Mr Agyapong said he was optimistic that the challenges and alleged irregularities that characterised the party’s 2023 flagbearer contest would not be repeated.
“I don’t believe we will see a repeat of what happened in 2023. We certainly hope it doesn’t happen,” he said. “All of us have worked hard to put measures in place to prevent rigging, so I am expecting a fair contest.”
He noted that the credibility of the internal electoral process is crucial to maintaining confidence among party members and strengthening the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr Agyapong further assured supporters that party unity would be his top priority should he emerge victorious, stressing that cohesion within the NPP is essential after what has been a keenly contested internal race.
“If I emerge victorious, I will work to bring the party together,” he stated. “Internal contests can be tough, but they must not leave permanent cracks in the party.”
He emphasised that regardless of who wins the primaries, all members must rally behind the eventual flagbearer, urging supporters to move beyond campaign disagreements and avoid actions or rhetoric that could alienate others.
“Words spoken in the heat of the campaign should not push anyone away from the party,” he added.
Mr Agyapong also appealed directly to delegates to turn out in their numbers and support his bid, describing the primaries as a defining moment for the future direction of the party.
The NPP presidential primary is currently underway across the country, with five aspirants competing for the party’s flagbearer slot ahead of the 2028 general elections.
