The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, has been officially declared the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East following today’s by-election, despite a notably low voter turnout.

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), Baba Jamal secured 63% of the votes, translating to 10,884 votes out of a total 17,048 votes cast across 113 polling stations, with 120 ballots spoilt.

His main challenger, Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,009 votes, while independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda received 1,885 votes. Another independent contender, David Kanor, polled 104 votes, and Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) received 43 votes.

The EC announced the results on Tuesday evening, confirming Baba Jamal’s victory. Observers noted that the low turnout could be partly attributed to the demands of the working day and the ongoing Ramadan fasting period.

News Africa Ghana emphasizes that continued civic education is crucial to strengthen democratic participation and to address the persistent challenge of low voter turnout in Ghanaian elections.
