Ghanaians Must Not Grant Politicians Freedom To Exploit Them – Shamima Muslim
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has urged Ghanaians to hold political leaders accountable and resist any attempts to be taken for granted by those in power.
Speaking on Joy FM’s PM Express on Monday, February 10, she stated that citizens must not permit politicians, regardless of their party affiliation, to abuse their positions and misappropriate national resources.
“We must not give political actors any power, and that includes us in the NDC. We must not give them any power to think that at any point in time, they can take the citizens for granted, do as they please with our collective resources, and go and enjoy whatever loot they may have illegally acquired through the instrument of their position of power,” she stated.
Her comments come at a time when public frustration over corruption remains high, with many citizens demanding justice for misappropriated state funds.
She urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant and ensure that leaders, regardless of their political affiliations, do not abuse their trust.
Shamima Muslim expressed concern over the handling of corruption allegations under the Akufo-Addo administration, citing the lack of accountability in major financial scandals.
“There’s a reason why His Excellency, the former president, was called a clearing agent. Why should we not take a second look at an administration that showed no commitment in even investigating some of these matters but rather cleared some of these cases even before investigations were to commence or be completed?” she questioned.
She pointed to several high-profile cases that demand scrutiny, particularly the National Cathedral scandal, where $58 million remains unaccounted for, and the Pwalugu Dam project, which saw $12 million allegedly sunk into a non-existent project.
“There are so many issues arising out of that particular scandal. These are the main questions that require looking into,” she insisted.
Additionally, she raised concerns over politically exposed persons acquiring state assets under questionable circumstances.
“If they need to return those assets, they should return those assets. And I’m sure the Attorney General will be sharing with us the options that he intends to roll out,” she remarked.
However, Shamima Muslim assured Ghanaians that any efforts to hold individuals accountable would be done justly.
“If I need to assure Ghanaians of anything, it is that under the watch of His Excellency, no one will be unjustifiably persecuted,” she added.
