DVLA to Introduce Six-Month Temporary Sticker for Unregistered Imported Vehicles in Ghana

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is set to introduce a six-month temporary sticker for newly imported vehicles under its new smart number plate and vehicle licensing regime, a move aimed at strengthening compliance with Ghana’s vehicle registration laws.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, August 5, the Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, announced that the temporary sticker will be issued to vehicle owners who have imported cars but have not yet completed the mandatory registration process.

According to Mr. Kotey, the initiative is designed to eliminate the widespread misuse of DV number plates, which are legally reserved for licensed garage operators and not private vehicle owners.

“If you are a Ghanaian citizen, you are not a garage owner, and you are not ready to register your car, come for this sticker,” he stated.

He explained that the temporary sticker will remain valid for only six months, after which the vehicle owner must complete the registration process. The permit will not be renewable.

“We’ll give it to you for only six months. After six months, you must register. It’s not renewable,” he stressed.

Each temporary sticker will contain essential vehicle information, including the vehicle type, colour and expiry date, enabling law enforcement agencies to easily identify vehicles awaiting permanent registration.

“This one has the car type on it, the colour on it and the expiry date, after which the owner must register the vehicle,” Mr. Kotey added.

The DVLA CEO disclosed that the initiative forms part of the Authority’s broader smart number plate and licensing reforms and will begin with a pilot rollout later this August before full nationwide implementation.
