Level 400 students of the 2022/2023 admission cohort of the African University of Communication and Business (AUCB), formerly the African University College of Communications (AUCC), have welcomed a clarification from the University of Ghana (UG) regarding the processing and issuance of their degree certificates.
The students say the University of Ghana’s response to their petition has significantly strengthened their position in the ongoing dispute over the certificates they are entitled to receive upon completion of their programmes.
In a letter signed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Gordon A. Awandare, the University stated that students admitted to AUCC under its affiliation arrangement “remain students governed by the terms and conditions of that affiliation arrangement for the duration of their programme of study.”
The University further indicated that students admitted during the 2022/2023 academic year who satisfy all academic requirements “shall be eligible for the award of certificates issued under the seal of the University of Ghana.”
The clarification has been welcomed by the affected students, who say it vindicates their long-standing position that they remain entitled to certification under the University of Ghana’s affiliation framework.
According to the students, they were admitted under the affiliation arrangement with the University of Ghana and accepted admission on the understanding that, upon successfully completing their programmes and meeting the relevant academic requirements, they would receive certificates issued under the University’s seal.
They argue that the issue therefore goes beyond the name that appears on their certificates, stressing that it concerns the protection of their legitimate expectations, academic rights and the terms and conditions under which they enrolled.
The students maintain that any attempt to replace University of Ghana certificates with AUCB degrees for students admitted under the affiliation regime would amount to a departure from the understanding under which they commenced their studies.
Students challenge AUCB position
The affected students have also challenged comments attributed to the Vice-Chancellor of AUCB, Prof. Isaac Abeku Blankson, during a meeting with them on May 22, 2026.
According to the students, Prof. Blankson indicated that pursuing University of Ghana certificates could take several years and advised them to consider accepting AUCB degrees instead.
The students have rejected that position, arguing that administrative difficulties or delays cannot override the academic and institutional obligations arising from the affiliation arrangement under which they were admitted.
They insist that their demand does not amount to a request for special treatment or preferential consideration but rather a call for the fulfilment of commitments made to them throughout their academic journey.
They point to their admission documentation, academic records, examination arrangements and other institutional representations as part of the basis for their claim that they remain entitled to certification under the University of Ghana affiliation framework.
Awaiting GTEC’s final communication
The students have consequently urged their colleagues to remain calm, vigilant and united while they await further communication from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) following their petition.
They have also cautioned affected students against misinformation and what they describe as attempts to misrepresent the circumstances surrounding the matter.
“We encourage all affected students to remain focused and not fall for misleading narratives. We are pursuing the matter through the appropriate channels and remain committed to ensuring that our legitimate academic rights are protected,” the students said.
The group says it will continue engaging the relevant stakeholders and keep all affected students informed of developments as efforts to resolve the matter continue.
The students’ position comes after the University of Ghana’s clarification that those admitted under the affiliation arrangement remain governed by its terms and conditions for the duration of their programmes, with eligible students in the 2022/2023 cohort entitled to certificates issued under the University’s seal.
The final outcome is expected to depend on further engagements among the affected students, AUCB, the University of Ghana and GTEC.
