Lionel Messi Announces International Retirement After Argentina’s 2026 World Cup Final Defeat

Argentina football legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to one of the most remarkable careers in the history of the game.

The 39-year-old forward said the decision was painful but acknowledged that he believes the time has come to step away from representing his country.

“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep in my soul, but I understand that it is the right time,” Messi wrote in a statement shared on Instagram.

Messi said he had always given everything for Argentina, stressing that his commitment to the national team extended beyond the period in which he and his teammates achieved major international success.

“I swear I always gave everything, not just in the last few years when we won everything but before that too, and I always fought and gave my all for this shirt,” he added.

Messi’s international career reached its greatest height in 2022 when he captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar. Argentina defeated France on penalties in a dramatic final in Doha, with Messi scoring twice during the match before converting his penalty in the shootout.

However, Argentina were unable to defend their World Cup title in 2026, losing 1-0 to Spain in the final.

The defeat came after Messi had already begun reflecting on his future in football. Following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, in August, the Argentine superstar revealed that he had “serious doubts” about continuing to play football of any kind for “much longer.”

Messi’s decision marks the potential end of an extraordinary international career that saw him become Argentina’s most iconic football figure and finally secure the major international trophies that had eluded him for much of his career.

His achievements with Argentina include winning the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and other international honours, cementing his status as one of the greatest players ever to represent the country.

For millions of Argentine supporters, Messi’s retirement will close a defining chapter in the national team’s history, following years in which he carried the expectations of an entire footballing nation.

His departure also leaves Argentina facing the challenge of building a new generation of leaders capable of filling the void left by a player who has been at the centre of the national team for more than a decade.
