Mfantseman Assembly Rejects Unapproved Transport Fares, Directs Drivers to Revert to Approved Rates

The Mfantseman Municipal Assembly has directed all commercial transport operators within the Municipality to revert to the approved public transport fares, following concerns over reports that some drivers have been charging passengers unapproved rates.

The Assembly said it takes a serious exception to the reported increase in transport fares and has urged transport operators to strictly comply with the approved fares pending the outcome of ongoing discussions between the government and road transport operators.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 7, 2026, the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly said the directive followed a meeting between the Assembly’s management and the leadership of the various transport unions operating within the Municipality.

According to the Assembly, the meeting was aimed at addressing concerns surrounding the charging of transport fares and ensuring that passengers are not subjected to unauthorised fare increases.

“Following a fruitful meeting between the Management of the Assembly and the leadership of the Transport Unions on Monday, 7th September 2026, it was resolved that all transport operators revert to charging the approved transport fares,” the statement said.

The Assembly explained that the approved fares would remain in force pending the conclusion of engagements between the Government and Road Transport Operators on any proposed adjustment or otherwise of public transport fares.

Public urged to report offending drivers

The Mfantseman Municipal Assembly has also called on members of the public to report drivers who continue to charge fares above the approved rates.

Passengers are encouraged to report such drivers to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service in Mankessim for the necessary action.

“The general public is hereby urged to report to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Mankessim, any driver who charges unapproved transport fares after the release of this directive,” the Assembly stated.

The directive is expected to provide relief to commuters who may have been affected by arbitrary fare increases and to ensure that transport operators adhere to officially approved rates.

Transport operators cautioned

The Assembly has further cautioned all commercial transport operators within the Municipality to comply fully with the directive.

“All transport operators are therefore strongly urged to adhere strictly to this directive,” the statement added.

The development comes amid ongoing discussions between government and road transport operators over the possible adjustment of public transport fares.

Until any new fares are officially approved and announced, the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly has made it clear that drivers are expected to continue charging the existing approved rates.

The Assembly has therefore urged both drivers and passengers to cooperate with the directive to promote fairness, accountability and orderly public transportation within the Mfantseman Municipality.
