The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfantseman Constituency, Hon. Dr. Ebenezer Prince Arhin, has condemned the rape and sexual abuse of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), describing such acts as “wickedness” and calling for greater protection for vulnerable members of society.

Dr. Arhin expressed concern over reports of persons with disabilities being subjected to sexual violence, stressing the need for society to protect their rights, dignity and safety.

He urged the public to reject all forms of abuse against persons with disabilities and called on families, caregivers and community members to remain vigilant and ensure that perpetrators of sexual violence are held accountable under the law.

The MP’s concerns highlight the need for stronger public awareness, community vigilance and effective protection measures to ensure that persons with disabilities can live free from violence, exploitation and discrimination.

MP Cautions Against Misuse of Support for PWDs

Beyond the concerns about sexual abuse, Dr. Arhin cautioned individuals responsible for caring for persons with disabilities against misappropriating financial assistance and items provided to support their welfare.

He stressed that the assistance was intended for the beneficiaries and must not be diverted for the personal use of caregivers or other individuals entrusted with managing their affairs.

“For heaven’s sake, persons with disabilities have certain limitations and must directly benefit from the support provided. Let us ensure that the financial assistance reaches the intended beneficiaries and is used for its intended purpose,” he stated.

The MP emphasised the importance of accountability and compassion, urging those responsible for the beneficiaries to ensure that the support reaches the intended recipients and improves their living conditions.

According to Dr. Prince Arhin, the occasion was also significant because, in his account, no previous MP had personally joined the beneficiaries during a presentation of this nature in the constituency.

The MP made the remarks during the presentation of financial assistance and other items to persons with disabilities in the Mfantseman Constituency on Friday, October 23, 2026.

Some beneficiaries received financial assistance, while others were provided with equipment tailored to their specific needs and income-generating activities.

The items distributed included 25 chest freezers, one hair dryer, one water-pumping machine for farming, one laptop, one vegetable-grinding machine and a motorbike.

The intervention is intended to support beneficiaries in their respective economic activities, promote self-reliance and create opportunities for improved livelihoods.

The provision of equipment suited to different trades and occupations is expected to help some beneficiaries strengthen existing businesses or pursue income-generating activities.

Beneficiaries Express Appreciation

Some beneficiaries who spoke to NewsAfricaGhana’s Solomon Kobina Acquah expressed heartfelt appreciation to the government, the MP and the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly for the assistance.

They pledged to utilise the financial assistance and equipment effectively to improve their livelihoods and make the government, the MP, the Assembly and the people of Mfantseman proud.

The programme highlighted the importance of empowering persons with disabilities through financial assistance and livelihood support, alongside measures to protect them from sexual violence, exploitation and other forms of abuse.

Dr. Arhin’s remarks serve as a call for society to uphold the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities while ensuring that assistance intended for them translates into meaningful improvements in their lives.
