Accra Police Barracks Fire Victims Receive GH¢15,000 Relief Support for Affected Families

The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, on Thursday, June 4, provided financial support of GH₵15,000 each to families affected by the fire outbreak at the Accra Central Police barracks, as part of efforts to ease the immediate economic burden on victims.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak disclosed the intervention during Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s visit on Friday, June 5, where officials assessed the extent of damage caused by the fire.

He explained that the cash support is intended to help affected families meet urgent needs, including clothing and basic necessities, in the aftermath of the disaster.

According to him, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly also contributed GH₵120,000 to support the relief efforts, working alongside the Interior Ministry and the Police Service to complement the intervention.

“…We were able to extend together with the police about GH₵15,000 to each family for them to be able to buy some clothes. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly also gave GH₵120,000 to the police to further support,” he said.

He added that the distribution of the support was guided by an assessment-based formula to ensure fairness in the allocation of funds to affected families.

The fire, which occurred on the night of June 3, destroyed  buildings at the Accra Central Market, prompting coordinated relief efforts from government agencies and security services.
