An abandoned hospital project under Ghana’s Agenda 111 initiative in Diaso, located in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region, has reportedly been overtaken by reptiles, raising serious concerns about public safety and the waste of state resources.

The facility, which forms part of the government’s flagship Agenda 111 programme aimed at expanding healthcare infrastructure nationwide, has been left uncompleted for an extended period. With construction stalled, the site has deteriorated significantly, with overgrown vegetation and reptiles now occupying the premises.

Speaking to the media, the Chief of Diaso, Nana Agyaa Ameyaw III, expressed deep concern over the state of the project and its implications for the community. He appealed to government to urgently resume and complete the hospital to serve the health needs of Diaso and surrounding communities.

According to the chief, the area currently lacks a fully functional hospital, relying instead on a few clinics that are ill-equipped to handle critical healthcare demands. He stressed that completing the Agenda 111 hospital would significantly improve access to quality healthcare and reduce the burden on residents who must travel long distances for medical services.

A resident of Upper Denkyira West, Mr. Benjamin Boakye, also lamented the stalled project, attributing the delay to the transition in government following the 2024 general elections. He noted that the original vision of constructing 111 hospitals across the country appears to have slowed, leaving key projects like the Diaso facility incomplete.

Mr. Boakye further described the situation as a misuse of national resources, warning that continued neglect could lead to further deterioration of the structure and loss of already invested funds. He urged government to prioritise the completion of ongoing projects instead of initiating new ones in the area.

He added that completing the hospital would not only enhance healthcare delivery but also create employment opportunities and boost local development.

Residents have also called on the District Chief Executive to provide security at the site to prevent theft and vandalism of construction materials, as well as to ensure the safety of community members who may be at risk due to the presence of reptiles.

The situation at Diaso highlights growing concerns over abandoned public infrastructure projects and the urgent need for timely completion to deliver intended benefits to communities.
