Decide On Number Of Guests To Accompany Nominees For Vetting – Dafeamekpor
The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called for the establishment of clear guidelines to limit the number of guests accompanying ministerial nominees during their vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
Speaking before the investigative committee today, 10 February, Mr Dafeamekpor emphasised the rising concerns about overcrowding and the security risks posed by the large number of people who often accompany the nominees.
“We must insist on having a specific number of people invited to support each nominee,” Mr Dafeamekpor said.
“Every nominee should come with at least 10 supporters.” He pointed out that, in the past vetting processes, some nominees have arrived with hundreds of supporters, leading to disruptions both inside and outside Parliament.
On several occasions, large groups of supporters have gathered outside committee rooms, with some non-accredited individuals managing to infiltrate the proceedings and disrupt the committee’s work.
He stressed that such incidents must be taken seriously to maintain order and ensure that the committee’s work is not impeded by external factors.
He concluded by calling for an immediate review of the current procedures to ensure that nominees’ supporters are properly vetted and that the proceedings are not overwhelmed by large, unaccredited crowds.
