HIV Test Kit Shortage Averted Following Government Intervention – Ghana AIDS Commission

The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed that earlier concerns over a potential shortage of HIV test kits have been addressed through government intervention.
The Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) on July 1, 2026 warned that the depletion of current supplies could undermine progress toward epidemic control and stall efforts to meet global HIV targets.
Civil society organisations raised concerns that without urgent intervention, the shortage could delay diagnosis, restrict access to antiretroviral therapy, and increase the risk of new infections.
Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday July 21, Deputy Director of Programmes at the Ghana AIDS Commission, Derrick Oppong-Agyare, assured that Ghana is past a potential risk as a result of timely government intervention.
“The government duly stepped in and now we have handled that challenge. We are over the stage where we didn’t have enough test kits”, he noted.
Mr. Oppong-Agyare noted that additional measures are also being implemented to overcome barriers to HIV self-testing and improve access to testing services.
“The good news is that the HIV self-test kit that we’ve been using, we’re now going fully digital. Hopefully before the end of this year, it will be fully integrated in English, in other four or five languages.
“This means you can go on your phone and there will be step-by-step instructions or directions that one can take to, where you can test in the comfort of your home. It reduces that barrier which is preventing people from testing.
“When we launch the HIV self-test case locally, we are expecting or projecting that others who cannot easily use their phones in English can understand with diverse options in local languages more easily”.
However, he stressed that sustained efforts are needed if Ghana is to achieve its goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
