Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has dismissed growing speculation over who will lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 general election, insisting that the government’s priority must remain delivering on the mandate entrusted to it by Ghanaians.
Speaking on The KSM Show on Friday, August 7, the Vice President said discussions about the NDC’s next presidential candidate are premature and risk diverting attention from the pressing task of governing the country.
Responding to questions about whether she intends to contest the NDC’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 elections, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang declined to entertain the conversation, stressing that the success of the party’s future electoral ambitions will be determined by the performance of the current administration under President John Dramani Mahama.
According to her, the government’s immediate responsibility is to honour the trust reposed in it by Ghanaians through effective leadership, sound policies, and tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
“Whether we are going or coming depends on the work we are doing. It depends on the support we are giving our president who’s leading the charge,” she said.
The Vice President cautioned party faithful against allowing succession politics to overshadow the government’s development agenda, describing such conversations as a distraction from the mandate the NDC was elected to fulfil.
“If we are already going left or right, and centre and back, and it’s not even time, I think it’s a betrayal of the cause of the people, and I don’t think it is right,” she stated.
She appealed to Ghanaians and members of the governing party to channel their energy into supporting the administration’s efforts to address the country’s economic and social challenges instead of engaging in early political calculations.
“Please help us to fulfil the dreams of this beautiful country. Let’s focus on getting the job done.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further noted that the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general election was the culmination of years of sacrifice, organisation, and hard work by party members. She said that achievement should not be undermined by premature manoeuvring over the party’s next flagbearer.
Her remarks come amid increasing public and political discussions over potential successors to President Mahama ahead of the 2028 elections. However, the Vice President made it clear that the administration’s credibility and the NDC’s future electoral prospects will ultimately depend on how effectively it delivers on its promises during its current term in office.
She reiterated that the government’s focus remains on improving the lives of Ghanaians, implementing its policy agenda, and ensuring that the confidence voters placed in the NDC translates into meaningful national development.
