President John Dramani Mahama has nominated three distinguished legal professionals for appointment to Ghana’s Supreme Court, subject to parliamentary approval.
The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, as well as seasoned legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Tony Forson.
Justice Amoako Asante brings significant judicial experience to the nomination, having previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice before returning to the Court of Appeal in Ghana.
The nominations were made by the President in consultation with the Judicial Council, in accordance with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution governing appointments to the Supreme Court.
If Parliament approves the nominees, the number of justices on Ghana’s apex court will increase from 18 to 21, further strengthening the capacity of the Supreme Court to handle its constitutional, appellate and supervisory responsibilities.
The three nominees are expected to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting. Following parliamentary approval, they will be sworn into office by the President as Justices of the Supreme Court.
Their nominations are expected to bolster the judiciary with a blend of extensive judicial experience and legal expertise at the highest level of Ghana’s justice system.
