Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that President John Dramani Mahama will officially launch Ghana’s first electronic visa (e-Visa) service on Africa Day, Monday, May 25, 2026, describing it as a major step in the country’s digital transformation of travel and tourism.
In a Facebook post on Friday, May 22, the Minister said the initiative represents Ghana’s “warm digital handshake with the world,” aimed at making travel to the country faster, simpler, and more accessible for international visitors.
“President Mahama set to launch Ghana’s first e-Visa service on Africa Day — Monday May 25, 2026. Ghana’s warm digital handshake with the world,” he wrote.
Mr Ablakwa also disclosed that Africans will not be required to pay visa fees under the new arrangement, positioning the policy as part of Ghana’s broader push for African integration and easier mobility across the continent.
“Africans will not pay visa fees. Ghana is certainly open for business & tourism,” he added.
The announcement follows earlier indications from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Cabinet had approved the e-Visa policy as part of efforts to modernise Ghana’s travel system, strengthen security screening, and boost tourism and foreign investment.
According to the Ministry, the digital visa platform is designed to simplify application processes for business and tourism travellers while ensuring efficient and secure entry procedures.
Officials say the reform is also intended to reinforce President Mahama’s “Ghana is open for business” agenda, while improving the country’s image as a safe, welcoming and technology-driven destination.
The e-Visa system forms part of broader government efforts to modernise public services and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in global travel and investment markets.
