NADMO Rejects Claims of No Warning Ahead of Weija Dam Spillage

The Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Dennis Nartey Adjarnor, has dismissed claims that residents in downstream communities were not informed before the spillage of the Weija Dam, insisting that continuous warnings and evacuation measures were communicated well in advance.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Mr Adjarnor explained that NADMO maintained constant engagement with communities along the banks of the dam before and during the release of excess water.

According to him, the spillage became necessary after the dam level approached its operational threshold.

“The dam’s operational maximum capacity is 47 feet. As at 45 feet, they started spilling. With all these spillages, we were informing the communities along the banks. So all the communities are aware that the dam will be spilling,” he stated.

He stressed that NADMO, together with other relevant agencies, had already put emergency measures in place, including the identification of safe havens for residents likely to be affected by flooding.

“We were able to organise safe havens where we could easily evacuate them. What we are doing now is to ensure that we evacuate and save livelihoods and properties. They were duly informed,” he added.

The controlled spillage of the Weija Dam has led to flooding in several low-lying communities within the Greater Accra Region, forcing many residents to move belongings to safer locations while others seek temporary shelter.

Some affected residents, however, have expressed frustration over the impact of the flooding, claiming the warnings were either insufficient or did not reach everyone in time. Despite these concerns, NADMO maintains that public announcements and community engagements were carried out ahead of the exercise.

Authorities are continuing evacuation and relief operations in affected areas as efforts intensify to prevent casualties and minimise damage to property.
