Okada Rider Dies After Alleged Assault by Galamsey Taskforce at Amenam

A 29-year-old okada rider, identified as Kwasi Isaac, has reportedly died after he was allegedly brutalised by members of an illegal mining (galamsey) taskforce at Akyem Amenam near New Abirem in the Birim North Municipality of the Eastern Region.

Eyewitnesses say the incident began with a confrontation when members of the taskforce allegedly knocked roasted corn from Isaac’s hand, sparking a heated exchange. The situation quickly escalated, leading to Isaac being physically assaulted by the taskforce.

Despite sustaining injuries, Isaac managed to report the incident to the New Abirem Police Command. However, reports indicate that the taskforce members pursued him afterwards and continued to beat him until he collapsed.

He was rushed to the Abirem Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following day.

Police in the New Abirem District have since confirmed the arrest of one of the taskforce members to assist with investigations into the incident.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Eye N Eye Mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

Isaac’s father, Baba Moses, is appealing to the government and relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served and for his son’s body to be released to the family for burial.
