Afenyo-Markin’s Hostility Toward Media Exemplifies Dangerous Disregard For Democracy – UPDN

The United Press for Development Network (UPDN) has condemned the recent verbal attack on Joy FM by the Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In a statement released on Saturday, UPDN noted that Mr Afenyo-Markin’s “hostility toward a press organization performing its civic duty exemplifies a dangerous disregard for the principles of democracy.”
UPDN described the remarks as an alarming sign of increasing arrogance and intolerance toward the media by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“The United Press for Development Network (UPDN) vehemently condemns the unwarranted verbal assault by Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, now functioning as the Minority Leader of Parliament, against Joy FM… Afenyo-Markin’s hostility toward a press organization performing its civic duty exemplifies a dangerous disregard for the principles of democracy,” portions of the statement noted.

Mr Afenyo-Markin’s outburst came after JoyNews reported on the Speaker of Parliament’s declaration of four vacant parliamentary seats, a move that has sparked controversy.
The MP accused the station of “mischief and misinformation,” but UPDN argues that the radio station was merely fulfilling its duty of informing the public through factual reporting.
The UPDN stressed that Mr Afenyo-Markin’s comments represent an unacceptable attempt to intimidate and silence independent journalism, warning that such actions undermine democratic principles.
It added, “The media’s role is to hold power to account, and it must be allowed to do so without harassment.”
The UPDN therefore urged public figures to engage constructively with the media rather than viewing it as an adversary.
“The media is not an enemy but a partner in building a transparent and accountable society. We stand in solidarity with Joy FM and the entire Multimedia Group, just as we do with all media houses facing similar hostility.”
The statement further called on all leaders, particularly members of the NPP, to reconsider their approach to the media, urging them to respect the press and refrain from undermining journalists performing their civic duties.
“The increasing trend of assaults on press freedom must end immediately. We demand that Hon. Afenyo-Markin and the NPP reconsider their approach toward the media, showing respect for journalistic work and acknowledging the media’s critical role in nation-building.”
