Residents of the School Kessim/Ahenbrom Electoral Area, a suburb of Mankessim, have heaped praise on the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Mfantseman, Hon. Eric Stanley Acquah (popularly known as Mfantseman KK), for implementing swift and impactful measures to address long-standing sanitation challenges in their community.

Residents had expressed concern over the growing sanitation issues, which posed significant public health risks. However, the timely response from the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly has brought visible improvements, renewing confidence in local authorities’ commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of the populace.

The intervention forms part of the Assembly’s broader public health strategy, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama urging assemblies to intensify sanitation efforts. In line with this directive, the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly adopted an electoral-area-based approach to clean-up exercises, ensuring that each zone receives focused attention, supervision, and accountability.

Residents say this method has not only restored cleanliness but also enhanced community involvement, as households, youth groups, and local associations eagerly joined the clean-up activities. Many described the strategy as “innovative and practical,” especially at a time when poor sanitation continues to contribute to diseases such as malaria, cholera, and typhoid.

The success of the exercise has attracted attention from other Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who see the Mfantseman model as a promising template for addressing sanitation challenges across the country. Observers believe the initiative may soon become a national reference point for effective grassroots sanitation management.

Speaking in an interview, Hon. Eric Stanley Acquah expressed deep appreciation for the strong community participation. He emphasized that the Mfantseman Municipality is vast, and adopting an electoral-area-based approach is the most efficient way to tackle sanitation issues sustainably.

“Public health is a top priority, and we believe the best way to achieve lasting results is to decentralize efforts and empower communities,” he noted.

The Assembly Member for School Kessim/Ahenbrom Electoral Area, Hon. Roland Koomson, also applauded the Municipal Assembly, security agencies, Zoomlion, Environmental officers, health officers, and all stakeholders who played a role in the successful exercise. He highlighted the importance of unity and shared responsibility in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Committee Chairman Elder Richard Kumi expressed optimism that the renewed momentum will not fade. He called for continuous collaboration between residents and authorities to ensure that the gains made are not lost.

Residents hope that the initiative will be sustained and institutionalized, helping Mfantseman maintain high sanitation standards and protect public health for years to come.
