
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections after securing a decisive victory in the party’s presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Delegates of the governing party voted across the country in a closely watched contest that drew significant national attention. At the close of polls and collation of results, Dr Bawumia emerged winner with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast.

His closest challenger, businessman and politician Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, secured 46,554 votes, equivalent to 23.76 per cent, while Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum placed third with 1,999 votes, accounting for 1.02 per cent.
Former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, obtained 402 votes, representing 0.21 per cent of the total votes cast.
Out of a total of 196,462 votes cast, 562 ballots were rejected, leaving 195,901 valid votes recorded.
Dr Bawumia’s victory gives him a clear mandate from party delegates and positions him as the NPP’s flagbearer heading into the 2028 general elections.
The outcome reflects strong grassroots support for his candidacy, following months of nationwide campaigning and internal party engagements.
Party leaders have since called for unity, urging all supporters and aspirants to rally behind the elected flagbearer to strengthen the NPP ahead of the next electoral cycle.
