Mr. Ahenkorah Bartholomew has raised concerns over the apparent absence of speed monitoring devices on major roads across the country, urging authorities to take immediate action to curb the rising cases of speeding and road crashes.
He called on President H.E. John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, to as a matter of urgency respond to the worrying trend of reckless driving and enforce stricter road safety measures.
According to Mr. Ahenkorah, the increasing rate of road accidents is largely attributed to excessive speeding, which he believes could be significantly reduced if functional speed detection devices are deployed and actively used. He questioned the whereabouts of such equipment and whether they are being effectively utilized to promote discipline on the roads.
He also expressed disappointment in what he described as the failure of the police to enforce certain road traffic regulations, particularly regarding drivers’ appearance and general compliance with safety standards.
Speaking to News Africa Ghana’s Solomon Kobina Acquah Savvy, Mr. Ahenkorah further noted that many commercial and private drivers operate their vehicles without essential safety equipment, especially fire extinguishers, in clear violation of national road safety regulations.
He described the situation as unfortunate and called for intensified inspections and enforcement exercises to ensure that drivers comply with safety requirements.
He stressed that protecting lives on the road must be treated as a national priority, urging all relevant institutions to collaborate in promoting responsible driving and safeguarding the public.
