Some of the properties torched during the disturbance at Bawku SHS
Military personnel have been deployed to Bawku Senior High School following a disturbance by students that resulted in the destruction of school property and the assault of a teacher.
The incident occurred at about 1:00 a.m. on Monday, June 15, when students reportedly went on a rampage and caused extensive damage to facilities on the school’s campus.
Confirming the incident, the Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Abweko Azasoo, said the unrest was triggered after school authorities refused to allow examination malpractice by some final-year students who are expected to complete their examinations this week.
According to him, the situation escalated into violent disturbances during which one teacher was allegedly kidnapped by the students, while another was assaulted and sustained injuries.
The injured teacher was rushed to a health facility for treatment and has since been referred to Bolgatanga for further medical attention.
Mr. Azasoo said military personnel were subsequently deployed to the school to restore calm and maintain law and order.
“The military was brought in to prevent any further escalation of the situation and to ensure the safety of staff and students,” he said.
The extent of the damage to school property is yet to be fully assessed.
Authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the incident, while investigations are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the disturbances.
