A major incident has occurred at Old Nkusukum in Mankessim after one of the area’s oldest ancient trees unexpectedly collapsed, causing extensive damage to property and leaving one person in critical condition.
The victim, a man believed to be in his 30s, was trapped when the massive tree fell. He was quickly rushed to the Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital, popularly known as Roman Hospital, in Mankessim, where he is currently receiving emergency medical treatment.
The fallen tree also caused significant destruction in the surrounding area. Several electricity poles and power lines were brought down, disrupting power supply and posing safety concerns for residents. Parts of a nearby compound house were damaged, while a Fashion Design Shop located close to the scene was also severely affected.

Residents described the incident as shocking, noting that the tree had stood in the community for generations and was considered one of the oldest landmarks in the Old Nkusukum area.
Authorities and emergency responders are assessing the extent of the damage and working to clear debris from the site.
Investigations are expected to establish whether age, weather conditions, or structural weakness contributed to the incident.

Community members have expressed concern over the safety of other aging trees and structures in the area and are calling on local authorities to conduct inspections to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
