Torrential Downpour Displaces Residents, Destroys Mankessim Astro Turf Facility

A prolonged torrential downpour that lasted for nearly nine hours has left a trail of destruction across Mankessim in the Mfantseman Municipality and Central Region at large, displacing several residents and causing extensive damage to property and public infrastructure.

The heavy rains, which began in the early hours of Friday, June 19, and persisted for several hours, triggered widespread flooding across parts of the municipality, forcing many families to evacuate their homes as rising floodwaters submerged residential communities.

Among the facilities affected was the Mankessim Astro Turf, which suffered significant damage following the downpour. Portions of the sports facility were destroyed, raising concerns among residents and youth groups who regularly use the venue for sporting and recreational activities.

Several homes were submerged, leaving many residents stranded and homeless. Personal belongings, household items, and other valuables were reportedly lost as floodwaters swept through affected communities.

In response to the disaster, officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by the Municipal Director, Hon. Christian Abeiku Yankson and supported by other staff members, paid a courtesy visit to some of the affected areas to assess the extent of the damage and interact with victims.

The visit brought relief and assurance to affected residents, as NADMO officials pledged to work closely with local authorities and stakeholders to provide the necessary support and assistance to victims of the flooding.

Speaking during the assessment tour, the NADMO team encouraged residents to remain calm while efforts are made to coordinate emergency response measures and identify those most in need of assistance.

Community members have appealed to the government, philanthropic organisations, and well-meaning individuals to support victims who have lost their homes and other properties as a result of the flooding.

The latest flooding incident has once again underscored the persistent challenge of flooding in the municipality, particularly in Mankessim, with residents urging authorities to improve drainage infrastructure, undertake regular desilting of gutters, and strictly enforce sanitation regulations to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and prevent future disasters.

Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation as cleanup efforts begin and assessments are conducted to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the heavy rains.
