Former United Nations Governance Advisor, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, says former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare should have retired voluntarily from his position before being dismissed by President John Mahama.
Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews on Saturday, Professor Agyeman-Duah criticised how Dr. Dampare exited the role, stating, “My regret for Dampare is that once it became clear the president was going to replace him – a decision that had been circulating for weeks, if not months – he should have retired honourably.
He could then have gone to the President and explained his reasons, and the president would certainly have accepted. This way, he would have been sent off in a dignified manner,” he added.
He further emphasised that leadership transitions, especially for high-ranking officials, should be handled with greater sensitivity, ensuring that the process is respectful.
“Frankly, I am not happy with the way this has been managed. The departure arrangements are very poor,” Professor Agyeman-Duah added.
Dr. Dampare was removed from his position as IGP by President Mahama on Friday, March 14, and was replaced by COP Christian Tetteh Yohonu.
