The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has urged residents to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters following heavy overnight rains that have caused widespread flooding and severe traffic congestion across parts of Accra.
The persistent rainfall on Monday, June 29, left several major roads inundated, resulting in lengthy traffic delays and disrupting the movement of commuters across the capital.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the Director of NADMO’s Inspectorate Division, Richard Amuyatey, advised the public to prioritise their safety by staying away from flooded areas.
“We are on the ground, and we are responding to all incidents. What people need to do is stay indoors where they are and remain safe,” he said.
Mr Amuyatey cautioned pedestrians against attempting to walk through floodwaters and warned motorists and motorcyclists not to force their way through submerged roads, stressing that such actions could put lives at risk.
He further advised commuters who are stranded to seek safe shelter and suspend their journeys until the weather improves and floodwaters recede. Residents who have not yet left their homes were also encouraged to remain indoors until conditions stabilise.
NADMO says it has deployed response teams to monitor affected communities and assist persons impacted by the flooding as authorities continue to assess the situation across the capital.
The organisation has also reminded the public that anyone requiring emergency assistance can contact NADMO through the national emergency number 112 or call 0302 964 884 for immediate support.
Authorities continue to monitor developments as Accra battles the impact of the heavy rains, with residents urged to remain vigilant and follow safety directives.
