Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has rejected claims suggesting that the government orchestrated the resignation of the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare.

His clarification follows public speculation linking Dr. Asare’s exit from the Commission to alleged political interference and past comments by some political actors.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, June 15, Kwakye Ofosu insisted that the circumstances leading to the resignation were entirely voluntary and followed due process.

According to him, the legal framework governing the removal or exit of members of the Electoral Commission is clearly defined and has not been invoked in this case.

He noted that when a government seeks to remove a commissioner, established constitutional procedures must be followed, citing previous instances where due process was applied in handling similar matters.

Kwakye Ofosu further explained that, in this situation, Dr. Bossman Asare personally communicated his decision to step down by writing to President John Dramani Mahama, indicating his intention to leave office upon the expiry of his tenure.

“First of all, there is no basis for giving any assurance because nothing of that sort has happened. The process for removing a member of the Commission is clearly spelled out by law.

“Dr. Bossman Asare himself, of his own volition, wrote to the President indicating his desire to leave at the appointed date, and that is what happened,” he stated

The Minister added that discussions are currently ongoing to identify a replacement in line with constitutional and statutory requirements governing the Electoral Commission.
