Manhyia South MP Alleges Attempt to Forcefully Take Him to EOCO After Court Proceedings

Manhyia South Member of Parliament (MP), Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has recounted an alleged attempt by a woman claiming to be an officer of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to forcibly take him to the agency following proceedings at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Speaking to the press in Parliament, the MP, who is also representing detained nurse Salomey Baffoe Awiti as her lawyer, said the incident occurred shortly after he had appeared in court on behalf of his client.

The case was adjourned to Thursday, September 24, after Wednesday’s proceedings.

According to Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, a woman approached him after the court proceedings and asked him to accompany her to EOCO.

“She approached me and then she touched my hand and said I should join her because I was needed at EOCO. And I said, where from this? If you want me at EOCO, why don’t you invite me?” he recounted.

He said the woman claimed he had previously been invited to appear before EOCO but had failed to do so, an assertion he denied.

The MP said he offered to follow the woman to the agency in his own vehicle, but she allegedly insisted that he get into another vehicle.

“Then she said no. She would forcibly take me into their vehicle and drive me to EOCO,” he alleged.

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah said he subsequently asked the woman to identify herself as an EOCO officer and produce an arrest warrant, but she allegedly failed to provide the documents or evidence of her identity.

“At that point I inquired from her, what even shows you are from EOCO? At that point she couldn’t produce any evidence that she was indeed from EOCO. I also wanted to know the arrest warrant, whether she had an arrest. She also couldn’t produce anything,” he said.

The MP said he became concerned for his safety and decided to leave the scene.

He alleged that the incident appeared to him to be connected to what he described as recent kidnappings, which he claimed were being sponsored by the state. The allegation has not been independently established.

He explained that his decision to leave was also influenced by his responsibilities as the MP for Manhyia South, a member of the Minority Caucus and a lawyer representing Ms Baffoe Awiti.

“I needed to defend and protect myself for the benefit of the good people of Manhyia South, who I serve, the Minority Caucus, my children, and my whole family,” he said.

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah said he subsequently drove to Parliament, where he was scheduled to undertake committee work, and received support from fellow MPs and colleagues who had gathered to show solidarity.

“I’ve come to Parliament, and then my colleagues are behind me, and I thank them very much,” he said.

His account comes after a confrontation at the Accra High Court involving lawyers representing Ms Baffoe Awiti and security personnel believed to be EOCO officers.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged attempted arrest, including the identity and authority of the woman involved, remain subject to clarification from EOCO or other relevant authorities.
