Mfantseman Municipal Assembly in Collaboration with GWC Outlines Measures to Address Water Crisis, Others

The Mfantseman Municipal Assembly, in partnership with the Ghana Water Company (GWC), has announced a comprehensive set of strategic interventions aimed at addressing the ongoing water crisis in the municipality.

A high-level stakeholder meeting was held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at the Municipal Assembly Hall. The meeting, chaired by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Eric Stanley Acquah, brought together a wide range of stakeholders. These included Assembly Members, representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), health officials, traditional leaders, Social Welfare, personnel from various security agencies, NADMO, Zoomlion and community leaders.

In his opening remarks, Mr Ben Kofi Benefo stressed the urgency of a coordinated and sustainable response to the municipality’s water supply challenges. He noted that the current shortages have had a profound impact on households, businesses, and essential public services, underscoring the need for immediate and lasting solutions.

Representatives from the Ghana Water Company presented a detailed assessment of the crisis, citing several contributing factors. These included aging infrastructure, increasing demand driven by population growth, and environmental challenges such as declining water levels in primary sources.

To address these issues, GWC outlined the following key interventions:

  • Rehabilitation of aging pipelines and water treatment facilities to enhance efficiency and reduce water losses.
  • Drilling of new boreholes in underserved and hard-hit communities to provide short-term relief.
  • Public education campaigns focused on promoting water conservation and responsible usage among residents.
  • Strengthened enforcement mechanisms to curb illegal connections and water theft.
  • Pursuit of collaborative funding initiatives involving national and international partners to support long-term infrastructure development.

The NCCE pledged to intensify public sensitization efforts on water conservation practices, while security agencies committed to working closely with GWC and the Assembly to safeguard water infrastructure and support enforcement operations.

Participants at the meeting commended the Assembly and the GWC for their proactive approach and called for the timely and transparent implementation of the proposed measures.

In closing, Hon. Acquah reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to resolving the crisis and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between government agencies, community members, and development partners to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply for all.
