NDC Unveils Nationwide Activities to Mark June 4 Anniversary

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a series of nationwide activities to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the June 4, 1979 uprising, describing the historic event as a lasting symbol of accountability, patriotism and national renewal.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Friday, May 15, the NDC General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, said this year’s commemoration will reflect on the enduring values of the June 4 uprising and their relevance to Ghana’s democratic and institutional development.

“This year’s observance provides yet another opportunity to honour its enduring vision for our beloved country,” Mr Kwetey stated.

Theme for June 4 Commemoration 2026
This year’s celebration will be held under the theme:
“Strengthening State Institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 Uprising.”

According to the NDC, the theme highlights the urgent need to build strong, accountable institutions that serve the interests of ordinary Ghanaians.

Mr Kwetey said the June 4 ideals remain relevant as Ghana seeks to deepen democracy, promote integrity in public service and restore trust in state institutions.

“Every institution of our country must have these same values underpinning its operations. Institutions are not meant to serve themselves, but to serve the people,” he said.

Nationwide Activities Planned Throughout June

The NDC said commemorative activities will take place throughout June and will involve party members, traditional authorities, youth groups, community leaders, civil society organisations and party cadres across the country.

The activities will include:

  • Educational forums and public lectures
  • Community outreach programmes
  • Patriotic and commemorative events
  • Engagements with historians and veteran political figures

“The party, in collaboration with members, traditional authorities, community leaders, youth groups, civil society actors and all cadres of the party, will undertake a series of commemorative, educational and patriotic activities across the country,” Mr Kwetey said.

Public Lecture Scheduled for June 3 in Banda

A major public lecture will be held on June 3 in the Banda Constituency in the Bono Region.

The lecture will examine:

  • The historical significance of the June 4 uprising
  • The role of state institutions in ensuring accountability
  • The need to put citizens at the centre of governance
  • The relevance of June 4 to the people of Banda and the Bono Region

Mr Kwetey said seasoned politicians, historians, party elders and individuals with first-hand knowledge of the June 4 events will be invited to share their perspectives.

Main June 4 Ceremony to Feature Flag Raising and Wreath-Laying

The climax of the commemoration on June 4 will include:

  • A ceremonial flag-raising
    Wreath-laying
  • Lighting of the perpetual flame
  • A grand durbar of chiefs and residents in the Bono Region

According to the NDC, these symbolic activities will reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to unity, accountability and democratic governance.

“This will symbolise our remembrance of national unity and our enduring commitment to the ideals of June 4,” Mr Kwetey said.

Kwetey Urges NDC Members to Uphold Party Values

The NDC General Secretary also challenged party members to embrace the principles of discipline, sacrifice and service associated with the June 4 tradition.

“Every member of this party has to be a cadre because true cadreship means understanding our values and standing firmly for them,” he said.

Significance of June 4 in Ghana’s Political History

The June 4, 1979 uprising, led by former President Jerry John Rawlings and other junior military officers, remains a defining moment in Ghana’s political history.

The event is remembered by supporters as a call for probity, accountability and social justice — principles the NDC says continue to guide its political philosophy.

With this year’s commemoration, the party says it hopes to inspire renewed commitment to national service and strengthen public institutions to better serve the people of Ghana.
