The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed reports suggesting that it is considering changes to its parliamentary leadership, insisting that no discussions have been held to replace Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and his team.
The party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the NPP remained satisfied with the current leadership of the Minority Caucus and had no plans to reshuffle the team.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Mr Kodua Frimpong accused individuals circulating the reports of attempting to create divisions within the party’s parliamentary ranks.
“Let me state it categorically. The party has never had any meeting. The party has never thought about even deliberating to change the leadership in Parliament. We have not,” he said.
He further warned that attempts to create confusion between the party’s national leadership and the Minority Caucus would not succeed, reaffirming the NPP’s position that there was no ongoing process to change the parliamentary leadership.
NPP General Secretary Cautions Members Over Running Mate Campaigns
Meanwhile, Mr Kodua Frimpong has cautioned party members seeking to position themselves as potential running mates to the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general election through social media campaigns.
He maintained that the party’s constitution does not provide for the selection of a running mate through a competitive contest or public campaigning.
According to him, the decision rests with the party’s flagbearer in consultation with the National Council, rather than through campaigns by individuals seeking the position.
“There is nowhere in our constitution which says that the running mate is selected through a contest or through a campaign; so the people who are busily urging bloggers to promote themselves, you are wrong,” he said.
His remarks serve as a warning to party members against using media engagements and online publicity to influence the selection process ahead of the 2028 general election.
The NPP is expected to focus on its internal preparations for the next general election, with the party’s parliamentary leadership and the eventual selection of a running mate remaining matters of interest among its members and supporters.
