The President of the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, Rev. Dr. John Kobina Boakye, has called for a careful reconsideration of corporal punishment in Ghanaian schools, arguing that responsible and regulated disciplinary measures could help promote discipline and respect among students.
According to Rev. Dr. Boakye, the growing concerns about indiscipline in schools require urgent attention from the government, educators, parents and other stakeholders to safeguard the values needed to build a responsible generation.
He cautioned that failure to address indiscipline among young people could have serious consequences for society, including the destruction of property and other forms of misconduct.
Speaking to Tobinco Media Group’s Agyei Kwaku Mensah, Rev. Dr. John Kobina Boakye expressed concern about certain inappropriate relationships and interactions between teachers and students, which he said could undermine the authority of teachers and contribute to disrespect in schools.
He alleged that some teachers demand money from students, while others become involved in inappropriate relationships with students.
According to him, such conduct can erode the trust and respect that should exist between teachers and students and make it difficult for teachers to maintain discipline in the classroom.
Rev. Dr. Boakye further noted that when students become aware that a teacher is involved in an inappropriate relationship with one of their classmates, it can affect the way they perceive and relate to that teacher.
Parents Must Build Strong Relationships With Their Children
The Assemblies of God Theological Seminary President also urged parents to develop close and trusting relationships with their children.
He encouraged parents to become friends with their children and create an environment where they feel comfortable discussing their challenges, concerns and experiences.
He stressed that effective parenting should go beyond providing the material needs of children and should include guidance, counselling, supervision and open communication.
According to him, parents who maintain strong relationships with their children are better positioned to identify behavioural challenges early and provide the necessary support and guidance.
Government Urged to Invest in the Youth
Rev. Dr. Boakye also appealed to the government and policymakers to prioritise the proper training and development of young people.
He said the youth constitute the future of the country and must therefore be equipped with the values, knowledge, skills and discipline required to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He called for stronger collaboration among government, schools, churches, parents and other relevant stakeholders to address challenges affecting young people.
He maintained that efforts to promote discipline and responsible behaviour among the youth must be accompanied by proper education, mentorship and positive guidance.
Rev. Dr. Boakye’s comments come amid continuing public discussions about discipline in Ghanaian schools and the appropriate methods educators should use to correct students while protecting their rights and wellbeing.
