A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck China’s southwestern Guangxi region early Monday, killing two people and forcing more than 7,000 residents in the city of Liuzhou to evacuate as emergency crews continued search and rescue operations.

According to China’s state broadcaster CCTV and the official Xinhua News Agency, one person remains missing, while four others were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The earthquake caused the collapse of 13 buildings in the affected area, CCTV reported.

Authorities also warned of possible transportation disruptions as railway officials inspected tracks and other rail infrastructure for damage.

Despite the destruction, state media said essential services, including electricity, telecommunications, water supply, gas, and road traffic, were operating normally in the quake-hit region.
