A tiler believed to be in his late thirties is in critical condition after allegedly inflicting severe injuries on himself with an electric angle grinder at Mankessim in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

The victim, whose identity has been withheld, is reportedly a native of Kumasi who had been working on a tiling contract in Mankessim together with his apprentices.

According to sources, he resides at Ajumako Techiman and usually commutes daily to Mankessim for work. However, on Sunday, April 26, 2026, he is said to have visited a friend’s residence in Mankessim to rest.

While his friend stepped out of the house, the victim allegedly locked himself inside the room, plugged in an electric angle grinder, and inflicted a deep cut to his throat.

When the friend returned, he found the room locked from the inside. After several unsuccessful attempts to get a response, he forced open a window and discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood with a severe neck injury, while the machine remained plugged in.

He immediately raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to assist in gaining entry into the room. The victim was rushed to the Mankessim Roman Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital due to the severity of his condition.

Medical officials say he remains in critical condition and is receiving intensive care.

Friends and apprentices of the victim have indicated they are unable to explain what may have triggered the incident, noting that he had not previously shown signs of distress or disclosed any personal challenges.

The family of the victim has since been informed, while the case has been reported to the Mankessim Divisional Police Command for investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
