IGP Summons Volta Police Commander Over Alleged Extortion of Traders on Aflao–Accra Route

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has summoned the Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Akorli, over allegations of harassment, intimidation, unnecessary delays and extortion involving some police personnel stationed along the Aflao–Accra main route.
The allegations reportedly concern activities at several police checkpoints along the major transport corridor, including the Tokor Barrier, Ativuta Toll Booth and the Weta–Afiadenyigba Junction Barrier, as well as other locations towards Sogakope.
The matter came to public attention following a viral Facebook post alleging that some police personnel were demanding receipts and other documentation from traders transporting goods along the route.
According to the allegations, traders who are unable to produce the required documents are sometimes subjected to delays and allegedly compelled to pay money before being allowed to continue their journeys.
The Joint Association of Port Transport Unions (JAPTU) has subsequently called for urgent intervention by senior police authorities to address the concerns raised by traders and transport operators.
JAPTU stressed that its concern is not necessarily the number of police checkpoints along the Aflao–Accra route, but rather the alleged conduct of some personnel at the checkpoints.
The association cited complaints of prolonged delays, intimidation, harassment and alleged extortion, which it says are creating difficulties for traders and other road users.
Volta Police Command to Meet Divisional and District Commanders
Following his meeting with the IGP, DCOP Wisdom Akorli has scheduled a meeting with all Divisional and District Police Commanders in the Volta Region for Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The meeting is expected to focus on the allegations, assess the conduct of personnel deployed along the affected routes and determine appropriate measures to address the concerns.
Police personnel stationed at the affected checkpoints have also been cautioned against engaging in any form of misconduct or behaviour that could undermine public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.
The Police Administration is meanwhile constituting an inspection team to identify and investigate personnel who may have been involved in the alleged acts.
The inspection and investigation are expected to establish the facts surrounding the allegations and determine whether any officers breached police regulations or abused their authority.
Where wrongdoing is established, the Police Administration is expected to take appropriate disciplinary action against the officers involved.
The development comes amid renewed calls for greater accountability and professionalism among security personnel operating at checkpoints, particularly along major commercial and transportation routes.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates following the meeting and investigations into the allegations.
