The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ekumfi Constituency, Hon. Dr. Othniel Okofo Ekow Kwainoe, in collaboration with the Ekumfi District Assembly, has presented 500 mono and dual desks to the Ekumfi District Education Directorate to help address the persistent furniture deficit in schools across the district.
The intervention forms part of efforts by the MP and the District Assembly to improve teaching and learning conditions and ensure that pupils and students have access to safe, comfortable and dignified classroom environments.
The desks are expected to be distributed to schools across the district based on identified needs and the urgency of furniture shortages.
Presenting the desks, the MP, Hon. Dr. Othniel Okofo Ekow Kwainoe stressed that adequate educational infrastructure and furniture are essential to improving the quality of education.
He said the provision of desks was part of his commitment to supporting education and addressing challenges confronting schools in the Ekumfi District.
“Quality education requires a conducive environment. We are determined to ensure that no pupil or student in Ekumfi suffers discomfort while receiving instruction in our classrooms,” the MP stated.
Dr. Kwainoe further disclosed that an additional 1,000 desks would be provided and presented to schools in the district in the near future.
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting educational development, infrastructure and child welfare, describing them as critical pillars for the sustainable development of the Ekumfi District.
The MP also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the Ekumfi District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Ismaeel Nana Asamoah, for their support and collaboration in making the intervention possible.
According to him, the provision of the 500 desks would help reduce the practice of pupils sitting on overcrowded benches or sharing limited furniture during lessons.
DCE commends MP for intervention
The District Chief Executive for Ekumfi, Hon. Ismaeel Nana Asamoah, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the MP for responding promptly to the furniture needs of schools in the district.
He described the intervention as evidence of leadership that is committed to addressing the developmental challenges confronting the people of Ekumfi.
Hon. Nana Asamoah urged school heads, teachers, pupils and students to take good care of the desks to ensure that they remain useful to current and future generations of learners.
He also called for continued collaboration between the Education Directorate, the MP and other stakeholders to address remaining infrastructural challenges in schools.
The DCE disclosed that several educational infrastructure projects were ongoing and other facilities had been renovated across the district.
He cited the construction of a new six-unit classroom block at Ekumfi Abor, which, according to him, is expected to be commissioned and handed over in the following week.
He commended the MP for his efforts in supporting educational development and appealed to residents and other stakeholders to continue supporting and praying for him.
“The MP is really doing a great job, which he needs our continuous support and prayers,” he stressed.
Education Directorate welcomes support
Receiving the desks on behalf of the Ekumfi District Education Directorate, the District Education Director, Madam Kafui Mary Ahlijah, expressed profound appreciation to the MP and the DCE for responding to the furniture challenge.
She noted that a conducive classroom environment plays an important role in improving pupils’ attendance, participation and academic performance.
Madam Ahlijah explained that when she assumed duty in the Ekumfi District last year, she identified and raised concerns about the shortage of desks and other educational infrastructure with the District Assembly and the MP.
She expressed satisfaction that the appeal had received a swift response.
“I was really expecting this presentation because I made this appeal not too long ago and it has been delivered. We are very grateful for the kind gesture,” she said.
She assured stakeholders that the desks would be distributed fairly across the district, with priority given to schools facing the most pressing furniture shortages.
Madam Ahlijah also highlighted the ongoing and renovated educational projects in various communities and said the interventions would contribute significantly to improving the learning environment.

Several schools across the Ekumfi District are expected to benefit from the allocation, with distribution based on the level of furniture deficit and the urgency of each school’s needs.
