Police Divert Traffic After Multi-Vehicle Crash Blocks Accra–Kumasi Highway at Birimso Bridge

The Ghana Police Service has announced a temporary traffic diversion on the Accra–Kumasi Highway after a major multi-vehicle collision completely blocked both sides of the road at Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway.

In a public notice issued on Monday, August 3, the police said the crash involved a high-occupancy passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck, and a sedan, bringing traffic in both directions to a standstill.

According to the police, the collision caused a complete blockage of the highway, disrupting movement for motorists travelling between Accra and Kumasi.

In response, officers from the Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) based in Kibi were immediately dispatched to the scene to manage traffic, coordinate emergency response efforts, and facilitate the clearing of the wreckage.

To minimise congestion and ensure the continued movement of vehicles, the police have introduced temporary traffic diversions for motorists travelling in both directions.

Vehicles heading towards Accra are being diverted through Kibi via Nsutam, while motorists travelling towards Kumasi are being redirected at Apedwa.

In its statement, the Ghana Police Service said:

“The Eastern South Regional Police MTTD team from Kibi is at the scene and has temporarily diverted the traffic through Kibi at Nsutam for Accra-bound traffic, and at Apedwa for Kumasi-bound traffic.”

The police have urged all motorists to exercise patience, comply with traffic directives, and cooperate fully with officers deployed to the area as efforts continue to remove the affected vehicles and restore normal traffic flow.

“We entreat motorists and other road users to cooperate with the officers on the ground as they work to restore normal traffic flow,” the statement added.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the crash or confirmed whether there were any casualties or injuries. Investigations are expected to commence after the scene has been cleared, while emergency responders continue to assess the situation.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, use the designated diversion routes, and expect delays until the highway is fully reopened.
