Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has made several bold and eye-catching decisions in naming his starting lineup for Ghana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
One of the biggest talking points is the return of experienced goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who regains the number one position after losing his place to Hearts of Oak shot-stopper Benjamin Asare in recent months. Ati-Zigi, who was Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, has been entrusted with the gloves for the Black Stars’ crucial tournament opener.
In defence, Queiroz has handed a major opportunity to Marvin Senaya. The right-back is set to make both his FIFA World Cup debut and his first appearance at a major international tournament. Senaya joins Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku in central defence, while Gideon Mensah occupies the left-back position as Ghana lines up with a youthful but determined back four.
The absence of influential midfielder Thomas Partey has forced a reshuffle in the middle of the park, with Queiroz opting for youth and energy. Highly-rated youngster Caleb Yirenkyi earns a starting berth alongside Elisha Owusu, as the Black Stars seek to maintain control and stability in midfield against a determined Panamanian side.
Further forward, captain Jordan Ayew leads Ghana’s attacking charge and is on course to become the country’s oldest-ever player to feature at a FIFA World Cup. The veteran forward starts alongside Antoine Semenyo and Ernest Nuamah, with the trio expected to provide creativity, pace, and attacking support behind lone striker Kamaldeen Sulemana.
With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talents, Queiroz will be hoping his selection decisions pay off as Ghana begin their quest for a strong run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
