Delay Not Intentional – Ayew Afriyie Appeals to GRNMA for Patience

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has called for calm and continued cooperation from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) following the postponement of a scheduled meeting to discuss their conditions of service.
The meeting, originally set for Thursday, June 26, 2025, was expected to address unresolved issues related to the implementation of revised working terms for nurses and midwives. However, its rescheduling to Wednesday, July 10 has drawn concern from the GRNMA, who expressed disappointment over the short notice and perceived lack of seriousness from the relevant authorities.
In an interview with Citi FM, Dr. Ayew Afriyie explained that the postponement was due to unavoidable circumstances, primarily the absence of key government officials.
“Given that the two key ministers — Health and Finance — are both out of the country, it was not possible to proceed with the meeting. The Minister of Health is currently in Brussels, and the Finance Minister is in China, with his deputy in Abuja,” he clarified.
He assured the association that the government remains committed to resolving the matter, stating that the President has approved the way forward, and the meeting will be convened once the ministers return.
“With the understanding from the Leader of Government Business and the Majority Leader, there is confirmation that the President has agreed on the next steps. Once he and the ministers are back, the meeting will take place,” Dr. Afriyie said.
He urged the GRNMA and its members to maintain trust in the process, emphasizing that the delay was not deliberate.
“I appeal to the leadership and membership of the GRNMA to exercise patience and continue to show the good faith they have consistently demonstrated. This delay was purely due to logistical challenges, not a lack of commitment,” he noted.
Dr. Afriyie reiterated his respect for the nursing and midwifery profession and pledged to support a swift resolution to their concerns once discussions resume.
