CERTIFIED RESULTS: NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo Clinches Victory in Akwatia By-Election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has chalked up a decisive victory in the Akwatia by-election, with its candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, emerging as the winner over his closest rival, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to official results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC), Lawyer Baidoo secured 18,199 votes, representing 54.3% comfortably outpacing Asumadu, who garnered 15,235 votes. The Liberal Party of Ghana’s (LPG) candidate, Patrick Owusu placed a distant third with just 82 votes.

The outcome marks a notable shift in the political landscape of Akwatia, a constituency that has historically been hotly contested between the NDC and the NPP. The victory is being hailed as a significant boost for the NDC’s grassroots machinery and momentum in the run-up to the 2026 general elections.

Across the constituency, jubilant NDC supporters thronged polling stations and later poured into the streets in celebration as the scale of Baidoo’s lead became clear. Chanting party slogans, they described the win as not just a triumph for their candidate, but also as a clear signal of voter dissatisfaction with the NPP’s governance.

Political analysts are paying close attention to the implications of the result. Some argue that the Akwatia by-election could serve as an early indicator of shifting political loyalties ahead of 2026, particularly in swing constituencies. Others note that the NPP’s relatively strong showing, despite defeat, demonstrates that the contest for power remains highly competitive.

For Lawyer Baidoo, the win cements his status as a rising figure within the NDC and positions him as a key player in shaping the party’s future strategy. For now, however, the focus remains on Akwatia, where celebrations are expected to continue for days as the NDC revels in its latest electoral success.
