26-Year-Old Lawyer Dies After Collapsing During Ghana’s World Cup Victory Celebrations

Family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the tragic and sudden death of 26-year-old lawyer Sarah Araba Tettey, who reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest while celebrating Ghana’s victory over Panama on Wednesday.
Sarah, a recent graduate of the Faculty of Law at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), had only recently begun her legal career after being called to the Ghana Bar earlier this year. She was practising with O & A Legal Consult, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The young lawyer was reportedly watching Ghana’s opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Panama with friends at Standard Hostel in Bomso, near the KNUST campus in Kumasi, when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses say celebrations erupted following Ghana’s victory, but amid the excitement, Sarah suddenly collapsed. Concerned friends immediately rushed to her aid before she was transported to the KNUST Hospital, popularly known as Tech Hospital, for emergency medical treatment.
Medical personnel reportedly battled for nearly 45 minutes to save her life, administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other emergency interventions. Despite their efforts, she was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The news of her passing has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity and academic community, particularly among current and former students of KNUST’s Faculty of Law and her colleagues from the Ghana School of Law.
Described by peers as intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated to her profession, Sarah was regarded as one of the promising young talents in Ghana’s legal field. Many who knew her have taken to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to her character, professionalism, and bright future.
Her untimely death has left a deep sense of loss among friends, family members, classmates, and professional associates, who had looked forward to witnessing her growth and contributions to the legal profession.
Sarah’s body has since been deposited at the KNUST Medical School Mortuary pending further arrangements and investigations.
As of Thursday, neither her family nor medical authorities had issued an official statement detailing the exact cause of death. However, reports indicate that she may have suffered a cardiac arrest during the celebrations.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a joyous occasion for many Ghanaians celebrating the Black Stars’ victory, while also sparking conversations about sudden cardiac emergencies among young adults.
